Azure Palace sits on a quiet stretch of canal in the Grachtengordel, where the water is still enough to hold the reflection of the houses opposite. The front door opens onto a street most visitors never find.
Everything worth seeing is close enough to reach on foot, and far enough that the noise of it never arrives. What follows is not a list of attractions, but the handful of arrangements we make best.
BY DAY
Before ten, the Grachtengordel is still the neighbourhood of the people who live in it. Bakeries open, bicycles pass in ones and twos, and the light works its way slowly down the houses opposite. The concierge keeps a short list of what is worth the walk: a print dealer on the Prinsengracht, a courtyard garden open two afternoons a week, a café that has not changed its menu in forty years. Nothing on it is more than a quarter of an hour away.
BY EVENING
When the day visitors have gone, the neighbourhood goes back to the people who live in it. Windows light up without curtains, the bridges are traced in small lamps, and the water carries sound further than you expect. Stay out as late as you like; the door is answered at any hour.
